Emotions and Pain

When you go through a tough situation, there are different emotions that are involved. These emotions can actually feel like physical pain because the emotions trigger different areas of the brain that will activate physical pain.

Emotional pain doesn't just hurt psychologically; its hurts in the body. Since the brain is massively interconnected with the rest of the body, we can feel the physical pain even though most, but not all, of the processing is going on on in the brian. It is good to ask yourself where does your emotional pain hurt at? If we try and hide our feelings, there is still an emotional expression that happens in the body. If the expression doesn't happen, there will be residual muscle tension that could still occur. For example, if you weren't able to express to someone your feelings, you could get tension in your neck and throat area.

When you find yourself in a situation where you can't express your emotions, make sure that you're deep breathing. Deep breathing will activate the sympathetic nervous system as if we were dealing with a threat. It also helps bring your body to a state of calmness. That’s why a lot of mental health professionals encourage yoga with meditation or meditation on its own because it trains you how to deep breath and how to quiet the mind.
