The Cocoon Stage in Healing

If you've experienced any form of trauma, there's a healing process that needs to happen. Everyone processes trauma differently and the healing process is not going to look the same for everyone. I wanted to introduce the cocoon stage in the healing process because it's not talked about very often. When we hear the term isolation, we might automatically think about being alone, feeling depressed, or feeling scared. But sometimes isolation means freeing yourself from distractions and allowing yourself to have alone time alone to reflect and heal. A person that has experienced trauma may need a time of isolation and that's what the cocoon stage is referring to. It's allowing yourself to reflect and grow and most importantly a time when you can disconnect and turn inward.

Just like a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly, you must also undergo a period of transformation in order to emerge as a stronger, more resilient version of yourself. The cocoon stage is a time of introspection. A time when you begin to feel like yourself again. If you've experienced trauma, you may be worn out from all the noice and distractions in the world and need time to disconnect. Your sense of reality can feel daunting and scary. You may not feel like your normal self and you maybe trapped in a cycle of intrusive thoughts that's telling you that you're not good enough. To stop the healing process. To stop trying because nothing is working. When in reality, you just need time away to clear your head and to think about what just happened to find ways to heal and move on from your trauma. The healing process can be challenging and there will be moments where you feel like nothing is working but stay in the cocoon stage as long as needed to feel like yourself again. If you don't know where to begin or how long you should be in the cocoon phase, please talk to a licensed professional.
